Gas and Bloating

PRINT PAGE

Gas occurs when air is released from either the mouth or rectum. This is a normal function of our bodies, but when it becomes excessive or smelly, it can become an uncomfortable and embarrassing problem. An issue that can accompany gas, is bloating, when gas fills the abdomen and the abdominal area appears distended.

Intestinal gas is produced in different ways. People normally swallow small amounts of air while drinking and eating. When an excessive amount of air is swallowed, whether from talking too much while eating, eating too quickly, or drinking carbonated beverages, it can create an odourless rectal gas that is high in nitrogen and oxygen, or form gas in the upper stomach and cause belching. Intestinal gas can also be caused by poor digestion, which may result in bacterial fermentation in the colon. This gas, composed of methane and hydrogen sulfide, gives off a foul odour that is similar to that of rotten eggs.
