What is Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance occurs in people who are deficient in the digestive enzyme lactase. Lactase is the main enzyme required to break down dairy based products.

What causes Lactose Intolerance?

People often stop producing the enzyme lactase between the ages of three and seven. If someone does not have enough lactase, they are unable to break down dairy products sufficiently.

Undigested dairy can feed bad bacteria in the colon. These bacteria release many different types of toxins including alcohol, ammonia, acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. It is thought that these toxins are what cause the symptoms associated with lactose intolerance.

What are the signs and symptoms of Lactose Intolerance?

When dairy products are consumed the following symptoms can occur:

  • painful gas
  • bloating
  • diarrhea
  • other digestive upsets

How common is Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose Intolerance is common world wide.

What health problems are caused by Lactose Intolerance?

Many people who are lactose intolerant avoid dairy all together, in order to prevent the painful symptoms which occur after ingesting dairy. This can be difficult as dairy is an ingredient added to many foods.

What can be done to help with Lactose Intolerance?

Mild to moderate lactose intolerance can be controlled by taking LactoZYME.

  • LactoZYME - this enzyme formulation is designed to breakdown the main components of dairy (lactose, proteins, and fats). One capsule of LactoZYME will break down 1 serving (250ml or 1cup) of dairy within 60 minutes.
